Martha Wainwright – ‘Bleeding All Over You’

Martha Wainwright – ‘Bleeding All Over You’

We’ll try to get through this review without mentioning Martha’s famous parents and brother. Drat. Well, with them out of the way, we can concentrate on this wondrous curtain-raiser to her new album I Know You’re Married But I’ve Got Feelings Too. The splendid title is the theme of this single, a generous, stoic semi-ballad from the woman cast aside, with vocal hooks that melt the heart and an acoustic guitar ringing killer chord changes. Martha even manages to make “You’ve got cowshit in your brain” sound tender, as violins underscore the poignant moments and the acoustic strum turns over and over. Beautiful and raw.

Mick Hucknall – 'Poverty'

Mick Hucknall – 'Poverty'

Housewives, get ready - the Huck is back. But look, he’s ditched Simply Red and gone off on his own to record a covers album. Of course, the rest of the “band” always seemed like hired hands (can anyone name another member?) anyway, so it’s no surprise that the little fella with the big voice hasn’t really suffered as a result. In fact, although multi-millionaire Mick singing along to R'n'B legend Bobby ‘Blue’ Band’s self-explanatory ‘Poverty’ might seem a bit, um, rich, it’s the most refreshing thing he’s done since 1989’s A New Flame.
